Meet your Local Expert, Ryei!

Hi! I'm Ryei. Let's Have fun!
Hi, I’m Ryei! Originally from Japan, I spent half of my life living and working in New York before making Kamakura my home. I speak Japanese and English, and I love helping visitors discover Japan through its art, everyday life, and little surprises. My career spans art direction, design, and teaching. As a creative professional and art educator, I enjoy helping people see things from a fresh perspective, whether through an art workshop or while exploring a new neighborhood. I’m always drawn to beautiful details, a handmade ceramic bowl, artisan fablic, an intriguing shop window, or a spacious restaurant or cozzy Kominka (traditional Japanese house) café. Exploring with me often means taking a small detour to discover something special! In NY, I designed and coordinated art and design training programs for Japanese visitors, arranging visits to museums, galleries, and creative studios and accompanying groups throughout their stay. My favorite part was connecting people across cultures and sharing places from a local perspective. As an art teacher, I’ve designed and taught hands-on workshops for different age groups. With training in high school art teaching and a qualification in Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), I enjoy sharing both contemporary creativity and traditional Japanese arts. Naturally curious, creative, and flexible, I love local crafts, nature, fresh and healthy food, sweets, and cafés with character. In Kamakura, I’d love to help you explore neighborhood lanes, discover small shops, and pause somewhere lovely for a delicious treat. I understand that everyone travels differently. Whether you’re visiting on your own, with friends, or with children, I’m happy to adapt the pace and activities to your interests. Let’s explore Japan and have a wonderful time together. think of me as your local friend (Tomosachi)!
