He skillfully connected the religious significance of the temples, shrines, and cemeteries with their broader political and social context—from the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism that shaped the public cemetery and the Tokugawa enclosure (including Yoshinobu’s distinctive mound grave), to the human tragedy and cultural memory surrounding the lost pagoda, to the enduring role of sites like Tennō-ji and its bronze Buddha or Nezu Shrine and its gate. Explanations were detailed yet accessible, and he welcomed questions without ever losing the narrative thread or the group’s momentum. Equally valuable was his practical local knowledge. He pointed out special family-run shops and spots in Yanaka Ginza where we could sample or purchase authentic specialty teas, quality rice products, and traditional baked goods, and he drew our attention to distinctive neighborhood details—such as the colorful sculptures and traditional figures that punctuate the area—turning the streets into a living extension of the historical story. Recommendations felt personal and well-informed rather than generic. What sets Filippo apart is the balance he strikes.
