Just north of Tokyo, Kawagoe offers one of the closest glimpses of old Japan you can find without traveling deep into the countryside. Known as "Little Edo," the city is famous for its preserved merchant district, traditional storehouses, and streets that still reflect the atmosphere of the Edo period. Autumn is Kawagoe's own season. The sweet potato has been grown here since the Edo period, and once the harvest is in, the warehouse district leans into it completely: roasted whole, fried into chips, folded into ice cream and just about everything else. The cooler air helps too, since this is a town best walked slowly.
