Don’t let a sudden Tokyo downpour ruin your travel plans and a story. If anything, a rainy day is the absolute perfect excuse to lose yourself in the neon-lit, indoor wonderland of Akihabara. We recently visited Electric Town during a steady rainstorm, and it turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Japan. The moment the rain started, we ducked inside the area's legendary multi-level arcades. Walking into these gaming sanctuaries feels like stepping into a time machine. We spent hours exploring vintage arcades packed with retro fighting games, classic rhythm machines, and nostalgic 8-bit setups that you just can't find anywhere else in the world. The sounds of clinking tokens and pixelated soundtracks completely made us forget about the gray skies outside. What makes Akihabara truly magical, though, are its hidden gems. Because of the weather, we were forced to slow down and really explore the narrow vertical alleyways and unassuming upper floors of the buildings. We stumbled upon tiny, independent shops packed with rare retro collectibles, massive walls of unique gachapon capsule machines, and hidden electronics markets selling vintage tech components. Every floor of every building seemed to hold a completely new surprise.Of course, no rainy day exploration is complete without incredible food to warm you up. We escaped the damp weather into a cozy restaurant for a steaming, hearty meal that was pure comfort food. To top it all off, we treated ourselves to Akihabara’s famous fun dessert treats. From fresh, pastries filled with sweet fillings to beautifully crafted, quirky sweets, the local food scene provided the perfect fuel for our indoor trek.Akihabara proves that Tokyo’s energy cannot be dampened by a bit of rain. If you find yourself here on a wet afternoon, just grab an umbrella and dive into the endless maze of retro pop culture. It is an experience you will never forget

Akihabara is walkable, but without a local you'll spend most of your time in the obvious tourist stores. With one, you get the floors and back-street shops that regulars know, the context behind the culture, and recommendations specific to what you're actually into.

A.

Most repeat visitors stick to the same main street stores. This tour goes into the spots just outside that: the arcades, hidden floors, and specialty shops that don't advertise to tourists.

A.

Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
