Overview

Jimbocho is unlike any other neighborhood in Tokyo. Tucked between universities and publishing houses, it has spent decades quietly becoming the city's literary heart, floors of rare secondhand books, antique print shops, independent cafes, and curry restaurants that locals have been loyal to for generations.

With your Local Expert, explore the bookstores worth your time, the hidden food spots the neighborhood is famous for, and the cultural history that made Jimbocho what it is. Whether you leave with a rare find under your arm or just a better understanding of this corner of Tokyo, it's an afternoon well spent.

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Rose and Eugene, and exploring the bookshops as well as guitar street. Even the non-stop rain could not dampen our fun! We found lots of little gems that we wouldn't have found on our own.

Had a fantastic time exploring Jimbocho with Bibi today. She took me to many interesting spots that I would not have even known about if I went on my own. Loved browsing all the vintage books, movie posters, stationary, and seeing all the charming details - which is even more fun when you have a friendly local like Bibi to chat to along the way! Thank you so much Tomogo and Bibi!

Akihabara is walkable, but without a local you'll spend most of your time in the obvious tourist stores. With one, you get the floors and back-street shops that regulars know, the context behind the culture, and recommendations specific to what you're actually into.

A.

Most repeat visitors stick to the same main street stores. This tour goes into the spots just outside that: the arcades, hidden floors, and specialty shops that don't advertise to tourists.

A.

Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
